Moringa Oleifera has value for human health, the environment, and the global economy

OUR HEALTH

Moringa is a nutrient dense plant of which the majority is edible. The leaves alone have approximately 27% protein, more than legumes and all essential amino acids. The leaves are also high in vitamins A and C, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium and potassium. The seed pods and seed are a tremendous source of Vitamin C, protein, amino acids, calcium and potassium and contain a high level of antioxidants.

THE ENVIRONMENT

Moringa is especially valuable as an environmentally friendly, fast-growing crop that can “help to reverse deforestation and improve soil fertility”. Moringa trees grow at a rate comparable to weeds and the nectar of moringa flowers is beloved by honey bees, which provide 80% of pollination worldwide.

THE ECONOMY

Moringa is a functional plant in the agricultural system of many countries and has acquired a huge socio–economic importance over centuries. In 2016, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) partnered with UC Davis to study Moringa's ability to support California’s mission to have better diets, healthier people, and sustainable farming.
